O Conde de Monte Cristo (The Count of Monte Cristo) - 2002
m 1814 Napoleão Bonaparte, o imperador francês, foi exilado na Ilha de Elba, na costa da Itália. Temendo que viessem resgatá-lo, seus captores britânicos atiravam contra qualquer um que surgisse na praia, por mais inocente ou aflito que fosse. Por precisarem de socorro médico, pois o capitão do navio mercante Pharaon contraíra meningite, é exatamente neste lugar que Edmond Dantes (James Caviezel), o 2º imediato, juntamente com o melhor amigo de Dantes, Fernand Mondego (Guy Pearce), representante do dono do navio, resolvem aportar. Isto inicia um pequeno combate, que só termina quando Napoleão garante que os desconhecidos não eram agentes dele. Quando a situação se acalma, Napoleão pede para Edmond entregar uma carta pessoal para um amigo dele. Napoleão garante que não há nada de mais na carta, então Dantes concorda. Ao chegarem em Marselha Morell (Patrick Godfrey), o dono da companhia de navegação, quer saber o que houve, então chama Danglars (Albie Woodington), o 1º imediato juntamente com Dantes, que assume a responsabilidade. A determinação e a coragem de Edmond agradam Morell, que o nomeia o novo capitão do Pharaon, o que deixa Danglars muito irritado. Dantes, feliz com a promoção, vai correndo contar a boa nova para Mercedes Iguanada (Dagmara Dominczyk), sua noiva, com quem pensa em se casar num futuro próximo. Porém Dantes logo é preso como traidor, com a falsa acusação tendo partido de Danglars, que o odiava, e seu melhor "amigo", Fernand, que desejava ter o caminho livre para cortejar Mercedes. Dantes é mandado para uma fortificação, o Chateau d'If, que ficava numa ilha que era praticamente impossível fugir. Gradativamente Dantes ia sendo tomando pelo desespero, principalmente no seu aniversário de encarceramento, quando o diretor da prisão pessoalmente o espancava. Um dia as coisas começam a mudar, quando abade Faria (Richard Harris), outro prisioneiro, surge repentinamente. Ao tentar escapar o abade escavou por cinco anos um túnel, mas errou nos cálculos e foi parar na cela de Edmond. Os dois fazem amizade e o religioso ensina muitas coisas para Dantes, incluindo a localização de um fabuloso tesouro. Quando Faria morre, Dantes ocupa o lugar do abade no saco, que foi jogado ao mar. Assim, após vários anos, Dantes escapa e, como agora está imensamente rico, se intitula o Conde de Monte Cristo e com cuidado prepara a melhor maneira de se vingar de todos que o prejudicaram.
